What to Wear for a Maternity Photoshoot in Hyderabad
The most common question we get at Kidio Studio before a maternity session isn’t about timing or location — it’s about clothing.
What you wear directly shapes the mood, colour tone, and timelessness of your images. The right choice makes the bump the hero. The wrong choice makes the photo look dated in five years.
Here is exactly what works, what doesn’t, and why.
Colours That Photograph Best
Best choices:
• Whites and creams — clean, timeless, flattering against most skin tones
• Dusty rose and blush — warm without being loud
• Sage green and muted olive — earthy, elegant, photographs beautifully in studio light
• Warm caramel and terracotta — particularly stunning on deeper Indian skin tones
• Soft greys and charcoal — modern, clean, works well for couples shots
Avoid:
• Neon or electric colours — they cast colour onto skin in studio lighting
• Heavy patterns, large prints, or busy florals — they pull attention away from the bump
• Colours that exactly match your backdrop — you disappear into the background
• Very dark navy or black as your only outfit — fine as one look, limiting as your only one
Fabrics That Work in Studio Photography
The fabric moves with you in ways polyester and cotton cannot. These photograph best:
• Chiffon and georgette — flows beautifully, light reacts softly, easy to drape
• Silk and satin — catches light elegantly, looks premium in images
• Jersey knit — stretchy, form-fitting, shows bump shape naturally
• Lace overlays — adds texture without pattern noise
• Sheer fabrics with a solid underlayer — creates visual depth in images
Avoid: stiff denim, heavy cotton, structured blazers, or any fabric that adds bulk around the midsection.
Should You Wear a Saree?
Yes — and it photographs beautifully if draped correctly for a maternity session.
The key difference from a regular saree drape is that the pallu should frame the bump, not cover it. A lower-hip drape with the midriff visible is the most striking maternity saree look. Silk and georgette sarees in pale gold, ivory, or dusty rose are the most popular choices at Kidio Studio.
This is also one of the most culturally resonant maternity looks for Indian families — images that feel both contemporary and traditionally meaningful.
How Many Outfits to Bring
Bring 2 to 3 outfits to your session. This is standard at Kidio Studio Hyderabad and gives your gallery real variety — a formal look, a flowing look, and if you choose, a more intimate or minimal look.
What Your Partner Should Wear
If your partner is joining the session — which we strongly recommend for at least part of it — coordinate without matching exactly.
Rule: Same colour family, different shades. If you’re wearing cream, your partner wears beige or soft white. If you’re in blush pink, they wear muted grey or white. Avoid partners wearing black when you’re in a light colour — the contrast pulls the eye away from you.
Quick Preparation Checklist
• Wear minimal jewellery unless it’s meaningful — keep it simple
• Bring hair ties and bobby pins even if your hair is styled
• Avoid heavy perfume — studio sessions run 1.5–2 hours in a warm room
